Is it a conflict of interest if i run a blog with adsense that competitors of my employer might appear?

I am studying website Development and online marketing in my own time and run a blog which has useful information on subjects which i am constantly asked about in my work life. This site has adsense on it and just today my GM rang me up really pissed off that I was running a site about our industry and (a) had no links back to the company I work for (b) had our competitors ads running on it And (c) had links to relevant information provided by the government about the same subject.

Firstly I am studying web design so I built the site to test what I was learning and implement strategies that got indexed well in Google. My only purpose of the site was to educate and trial for myself things that I was learning.
Secondly I have recommended to the company that we implement some of the things I have learn’t and they keep saying “don’t worry about it well get someone to look at that” in other words outsource the advice that I am offering.

I feel like they are just pissed off that I would be able to get indexed higher in Google and that they didn’t listen to me but the blog has no commercial intent at all, maybe they thing I have more say in the ads but i don’t so I just took the site down for now and they want to discuss it later in the week.

I get from their point of view they see me as a representative of the company managing a site that has our competitors on it and that is a direct conflict i get it but do you think they can fire me?

I doubt they will but interested in peoples input.

The information of the competitors ads on your blog will be very useful to your present company if used properly.
    a) How many people are clicking on those Ad’s
    b) What kind of Ads are they displaying, how they are trying to attract by enticing ads.
    c) And also how much time people are spending on your blog, their comments and also what pages they are navigating.

So go ahead and tell your company people about this….

    Hope this helps…..
