List Building Mistake Number 2 – Having the Opt-In Box Out of Sight Below the Fold

One of the biggest mistakes in List Building is having the opt-in box below the fold on your opt-in page.

Now what the heck does that mean, below the fold? It’s on the second of half of something. Picture a newspaper and it’s usually folded. The front page is folded so everything below that fold is “below the fold.” Everything above the fold is “above the fold.”

What newspapers do is put the most important news and the biggest news above the fold. How do you get above the fold on your computer? What I want you to do is pick up your computer monitor and I’m going to teach you how to fold it.

Alright, just seeing if you’re paying attention, okay?

On the internet, on our computer monitors, above the fold refers to everything you can see on screen when you first go to a website without having to scroll down. Anything that you’ve got to scroll down to see is considered below the fold.

So the mistake here is having that opt-in box, having those names and email fields, below the fold.

It’s not immediately visible.  The prospect does not know what to do. It sounds silly that some people would not scroll down to find the opt-in box but some people won’t.

You’ve got to remember to set up your pages in your system in a way to cover both types of people. The people that know what they’re doing, they’re able to see what to do. The people that don’t know what they’re doing, you’re going to be able to take them by the hand and show them what to do.
