Should You Join a Dating Website?

Hello Mails

May 12, 2010

As a young single professional living in London it was inevitable that I would (at some point) join a dating website. For those of you who are not too familiar with this concept it is pretty self-explanatory: you sign-up on a dating website online, initiate contact with somebody who you find attractive and – subject to the feeling being mutual – arrange to meet with this person outside of the virtual world once you are both comfortable enough to do so.

Truth be known, registering with a dating website will never replace that adrenalin rush of walking over to that special someone who has caught your eye from the other end of the bar. However, it does have a number of benefits which could make it a refreshing alternative. With this in mind I am going to spend the remainder of this article highlighting what I believe to be 3 key reasons for why you should try online dating.

1. Like-Minded People

As a singleton, there is nothing worse than walking over to that person who you believe has been giving you the eye all night only to be embarrassed by realising that you got the signals all wrong. What is great about dating websites is that you have accessibility to a vast number of people who are looking for the same thing as you. Many sites enable people to state what type of relationship they are looking for – from friendship through to casual dating and even marriage – so with that in mind there can be no accidentally mixed signals being thrown through cyberspace.

2. Convenience

In today’s fast-paced world we are constantly looking to have things on our own terms and when it suits us. Dating is no exception, and one of the best things about online dating is the sheer convenience. You can spend ages surfing the profiles of various people, sending flirty emails and even enjoying instant messaging conversations with them, all from the comfort of your own home! Dating this way has, for many people, relieved the pressure of having to go out when they don’t feel like it, in the hope that they might just find someone worthy of their attention. It therefore comes as no surprise that many dating websites experience their highest volumes of traffic on the evenings of weekends, when people have opted for a Saturday night indoors rather than a heavy night out on the town.

3. Entertainment

Let’s face it: whilst some romances have been forged through dating websites there still remains a novelty aspect to it. Many people sign up with an air of light-heartedness and seek to meet new people and enjoy a good laugh. While these people do not find true love on these sites many still look at the whole experience as an entertaining one through which they met the funniest, creepiest, scariest or weirdest people ever! In this respect the whole online dating experience can put you in touch with new and entertaining people – not to mention a welcomed break from your usual circle routine and social circles.

So, if you were to ask me right now if you should join a dating website then I would say YES. It can be good fun and something different: however, the one thing I would add is the need to keep a light-hearted and open minded attitude to the whole experience in order to get the best out of it – regardless of what you might be looking for.
